Illustration

Illustration is most often used as a small part in some larger design project, but occasionally it has the opportunity to stand on its own, such as the new book “A Cheesy Tale”. Scroll down to see the book covers for the Sovereigns of the Dead series. There is even a produce box design for sweet onions in these samples. Enjoy.

Craig McDowall’s background is in the fine arts, and he is an accomplished sculptor and enjoys drawing. His most recent project was finishing 32 illustrations for a children’s book. Each illustration began as a rough thumbnail sketch. From that a larger drawing was completed, and the client signed off on each large drawing. Those drawings were then photographed and digitally transferred to Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for coloring. The result is “A Cheesy Tale”.

More often Craig uses his drawing skill to quickly create rough drafts for catalogs and brochures, or work on ideas for a trade show booth. Craig has a real interest and love of map making, and likes to draw directional maps or details of larger areas.

Some illustrations are mechanical as can be seen by the recreation of the Craftsman Mini Tools or the Ice Bear cooling system. Often an illustration is just a small part of a larger project.
